The brain acronym is a way to gather all the information you need to make your own informed decisions during pregnancy or labour. It allows the pregnant person/birthing person to ask a series of questions, so they are fully informed and understand what the benefits, risks and alternative options are regarding a certain test, procedure, or protocol etc.
To help further understand how to use the B.R.A.I.N acronym I have outlined some useful questions to go with each of the categories being Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, Intuition, Nothing. But of course if you have any others, please use them as well. You know your body and baby better than anyone.
What are the benefits of this? What does research say? What are the stats? Does this benefit out way the risks? How will the Benefits affect me and/or my baby if I chose to accept or decline this?
What are the risks of this? What does research say? What are the stats? How will the risks affect me and/or my baby if I chose to accept or decline? If this is not successful what is the next step?
Can you provide me with any alternative options to this? What are they? Are they more beneficial or risky to the other option I was given first?
What does your intuition say? How is it making you feel?
Often our intuition is overlooked but you do have to allow that to be the case.
What are the benefits and risks of doing nothing? I would like more time to think over my options. I would like more time to see how things progress overtime.
